Have you tried the blue books for Missouri, Kanas and other surrounding states? By this, I mean the listings of
Union soldiers (I forget the series title). There is a similar book series for the Confederates. The Tulsa City-County Library genealogical library has both these series. You ancestor might be listed in them. so one could establish what unit.
