The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Cherokee "Pins (" Kee-too-wha ?)

There is little in print about the IHG regiments but I'm hoping some of the participants on this message board will rectify that in the near future. I was pleased to see that Gary Zeller is working on a manuscript on the 1st IHG.

The best information in print that I am aware of is Wiley Britton's "Union Indian Brigade" -- I got it from Camp Pope Bookshop (www.camppope.com and search for "britton"). Another good book is Gaines' "Confederate Cherokee" which is about Drew's Regiment and their ultimate defection to the Union.

As for research sources, I would start with the ORs -- The Official Records of the War of the Rebellion that are available online. See my post at http://history-sites.com/mb/cw/itcwmb/index.cgi?noframes;read=3686

As for whether the term "Pin" is a negative term or not, as Steve Whitlock's post states, the term evolved and became generally associated with any Indian enemies of the Confederacy. As a despised eneny, "Pins" ranked right up there with "Redlegs" and "Jayhawkers". For Indians who were not allied with the Confederacy (particularly the Loyal Creeks), a Pin was probably a friend and ally.
