Lars Gjertveit on the 1st Chickasaw Inf.

I was looking for more information on this 1st Chickasaw Infantry and ran across this posting by Lars from last year.

None at all. This regiment existed only on paper, it was never assembled in the field and saw no service. Indeed there are reasons to doubt that all the men on its rolls existed, or at least signed up for service. How do you enroll a full 900-man Confederate regiment behind enemy lines in the Creek Nation in October 1863, purportedly representing one of the smallest tribes in Indian Territory, the Chickasaws, whose numbers were barely enough to maintain one battalion in the service? And who among the citizens of the Indian nations would actually volunteer for infantry service? Hunter's organization is so suspect that I do not believe the regiment ever existed. No Confederate commander in the Indian territory ever mentioned it during the war either.
