Red River Region Heritage Symposium:
A Chest of Historical Treasures

A symposium meant to encourage the awareness and historical heritage of the 19th century Upper Red River Region, which encompasses Southwest Arkansas, Northwest Louisiana, Northeast Texas, and Southeast Oklahoma. Studies into the 19th century culture of the Upper Red River Region and general 19th century cultural trends are included in this conference.

The event will take place on Saturday, July 28 at the 1914 Schoolhouse Auditorium at Historic Washington State Park. The following preliminary schedule will be used as follows for the event:

3:00 – 3:15 p.m. Josh Williams - Introduction and Welcome

3:15 – 5:00 p.m. Dr. Trey Berry – Early Exploration of the Upper Red River Region

Peggy Lloyd – Free Blacks of Hempstead County

Dr. Jamie Brandon – Archeological Sites in the Upper Red River Region

5:00 – 6:30 p.m. Break (Special Program and Tour to be Arranged)

6:30 p.m. Supper (1914 Auditorium)
7:00 p.m. Keenan Williams – Civil War Entrenchments along Red River

The cost to attend the symposium is $20 per person and pre-registration is required by Wednesday, July 25 to help with meal preparation. On the day of the event, attendees will make their payment at the 1874 Courthouse Visitor Center and receive their Symposium materials. Directions will then be given to the 1914 School House. A buffet meal is included in the cost. Attendants of the symposium are encouraged to arrive early if they wish so that they may eat lunch at the Williams Tavern Restaurant and view some of the programs in the park.
