By the way, the 1st Kansas was indeed a distinguished regiment but its soldiers weren't the first African Americans to fight alongside white soldiers in American history. Black soldiers fought in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812. In fact, Andrew Jackson ordered that his black soldiers at the Battle of New Orleans be paid the same as his white soldiers.
