We're ALL just "learning". Contemporaneous and first-hand memoirs are being surfaced constantly bringing new details and insights to which the best authors of the past had no knowledge. Imagine if we just relied on what was written by previous authors. The new books coming out, like Steve Warren's book on Cabin Creek, utilize newly discovered sources that previous authors didn't use or were unaware of.
