The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Fort Davis, Stephens Co TX; Fort Arbuckle, I.T.

Joy Uhrin,

Newcomb. A 24-year old kid named Samuel Pearson NEWCOMB kept a diary in 1865 in Fort Davis, Stephens County TX where locals forted up after the Oct 1864 Battle of Elm Creek in Young County TX. ..This young Newcomb referenced most men as "Mr." so it has required study of my 240 North Texas militia listings in order to identify these men. ..A lady named Martha Newcomb Fanning sent this diary but she doesn't know if that is her Newcomb.
.
One entry refers to Colonel James Bourland of Fort Arbuckle (145 miles distant) meeting with Comanches. Interestingly, 1-1/2 years later, one pony was traded for one captive.

"Bourland, Col. James, Feb 6, 1865 entry: 11 Comanche Chiefs came to Ft Arbuckle to treat with Bourland, rumor is that one pony would be traded for one white captive."

Diary kept in 1865 at Fort Davis

Fort Davis, Stephens County, Texas, on the Clear Fork of Brazos River. A week after the October 13, 1864 Battle
of Elm Creek, 120 people began forting up at Fort Davis for protection from the marauding Indians. Twenty
families were still there in November 1865. Resident Samuel Pearson Newcomb began a diary on January 1, 1865,
Journal, 1865-1873. Your author indexed the January 1, 1865 to December 31, 1865 portion of the diary and
included it on two pages of my 464-page Appendix and indexed those two pages in my 134-page Name Index, part
of my 1,022-page book. A typescript of the January 1865 part of the diary is shown in the following seven pages.
