Re: Hisaw, Highsaw of Lamar County, Texas

Martha Mary Hisaw Dalton was my great-great grandmother. She was the daughter of Carter Dalton and Elizabeth LeGrande of Tennessee. She married Frederick Highsaw (Hisaw) and they came to the Republic of Texas in the early 1840's. They settled in Fannin County near Bonham. As you can see, my family spelled the name "HIGHSAW" which is the earliest spelling in U.S. Census records. However, the spelling "HISAW" is the most widely used now. I know that a Jim Highsaw was a foreman on James Chisum's ranch, so I feel that Frederick and Mary were certainly related to him. To my knowledge, there is no Cherokee tie.
