Jim, I'm guessing that Doakesville was about 2 or 3 miles from the old Ft. Towson. I've never understood why Gen. Watie surrendered at Doakesville rather than nearby Ft. Towson but it was definitely outside in Doakesville. I do have some letters from my ancestor John B. Clark who was in the Quartermaster group that had earlier been stationed at Boggy Depot. In may of 1865 his letters back to his parents in Ft. Smith came from Doakesville not Ft. Towson or Boggy Depot. I also have a letter sent to him in Doakesville from a friend in Little Rock who had already surrendered and was trying to decide where to move to so those Confederates in Doakesville didn't hang on until June because they didn't know any better but because they did not want to surrender yet.
