Meaning of "C.N."

For example, it could mean "Creek Nation", "Cherokee Nation" or even "Choctaw Nation".

Unless the particular town is quite well known as falling within the borders of a particluar nation (like Tulsa, Cherokee Nation) how do we know which one it is?

I suppose a postmaster located in the I.T. during the 1800s would know all this.
