So back in the 1800s, how would a postmaster know where to deliver a letter addressed to "John Doe, Tulsa, C.N."? How would he know whether John's lean-to was in the Creek or the Cherokee side of "C.N."?

And did the letters actually get delivered to the home, or were they held at the post office itself until the recipient checked in now and then to collect his mail?
