I reviewed this book for On Point magazine. I thought she was at her best when describing the politics which led to the Cherokee civil war within the American civil war, and in discussing post-war events. She was deficient in discussing military operations. She made some unfortunate deviations into political correctness when it comes to women and ethnic minorities. the book at times reads like a dissertation (which it originally was), and has its scholarly shortcomings, but nevertheless provides a valuable introduction to this overlooked aspect of the war.
