Re: June 1863 Letter to Chilly McIntosh

Patrick,
The scanned image you emailed me is shown below.

As we discussed, there were a couple of words I read differently but essentially the same message.

During this time, the Confederates were quite active around Ft Gibson with high hopes of forcing Phillips to abandon the fort. They couldn't take the fort by frontal assault but they were stealing his stock, forcing much larger escorts for supply trains, forcing him to protect refugees in and around the fort, etc. Had it not been for reinforcements sent with supply trains from Ft Scott and the subsequent victory at Honey Springs, Phillips would have had to give up Ft Gibson and completely demoralize the loyal Indians.

I would inform you that I went to Texas to buy some things and have returned this night. I hear that you will have a fight soon with the Federals. I would be glad to join you in the fight if I was able. Unfortunate for me I was kicked by my mule two days ago. I can only use one hand. I fear it will be a long time before it gets well. The mule struck me on the back of my hand, one that was formerly broken, two of my fingers are nearly cut off from the shoe. I can not rest on account of pain. I fear the bone is fractured. Thus I have stated, for I think it my duty, to assist you in the coming fight and would if I was able.

    Yours truly,

    E.N. Johnson

The initials in the writer's signature are a challenge. As I said before, I can find no Johnson in the 2nd Creek Regt and none of the Johnsons in the 1st Creek appear to match "G" or "E" or whatever the first initial is. For now, I'm assuming this person was a civilian, perhaps a contractor, and I'm assuming his was a personal friend of Col. Chilly McIntosh based on the informal style. I have speculated that he was an employee on Chilly's farm.
