The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

I couldn't remember if he had any killed. Other than the "battle" on Middle Boggy, I think they just killed anyone of fighting age that wasn't in the IHG -- that is, if you weren't in the IHG you must be a Confederate. They must have run into small pockets of men camped together or on picket duty and completely overwhelmed them. Especially Willett's Battalion with a section of artillery (Co. L, 3rd IHG, "the artillery company"). Most of the Confederates were either furloughed for the winter or in winter camp. The Muscogee (Creek) were criticized for not making a stand on/at the Canadian -- they were more interested in caring for their families than stopping the invaders is the criticism as I recall. If Phillips had had the nerve, he probably could have destroyed Ft Washita, Boggy Depot, and Armstrong Academy and retreated back to Ft Gibson before enough Confederates could consolidate to oppose him.

With sufficient ammo and the other eight companies of the 14th KS Cavalry, I wonder if he could have entered North Texas... at least temporarily until he was flanked on his left. I don't think his superiors and the politicians in Kansas wanted him to "conquer" the Indian Territory so they weren't pleased that he took on this expedition and they didn't support his plans to invade the Choctaw Nation next. They didn't want the Five Nations to 'turn over', that is, to rescind their Confederate treaties and ally themselves with the US.
