Monument Dedication service

A dedication ceremony for the Civil War Veterans Monument that has been placed in Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater OK will take place on Saturday July 19th, 2008 beginning at 10:00 am.

This ceremony will be the culmination of the Eagle Scout Project of John Erickson, member of Boy Scout Troop 818 at the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater. The 7.5 ft. x 3ft. monument contains the names of all Civil War veterans buried in Fairlawn Cemetery on East 6th Avenue. Over 200 veterans are listed, including 11 Confederate veterans.

The project is sponsored by Capt. David L. Payne Camp #2, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. The camp, of which John Erickson is also a member, is located in Stillwater. With the help of the SUVCW camp members, Troop 818 scouts, and family members, Erickson canvassed the cemetery, researched each man of age to have served in the Civil War, and documented the service of each veteran. Several graves remain unmarked, and research continues to determine the unit the veteran served in so that a government headstone may be ordered and placed at the grave.

Veterans from nearly every state in existence during the Civil War, both Union and Confederate, are buried in Fairlawn Cemetery. In addition, one female nurse is listed on the monument.

The Monument dedication ceremony is open to the public
