Our friend Algernon Sydney Cabell was the son-in-law of Col. DeRosey Carroll of Pierce's "Division" of Arkansas State Troops confusingly called the 1st Arkansas Cavalry and also the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry -- confusing since there are multiple units with the same designations. Col Carroll was murdered by "jayhawkers" (from Arkansas, not Kansas) in 1863.
"It was reported that Parks, the renegade Texan, who, at the head of a band of jayhawkers had murdered De Rosey Carroll, had been caught and was to be sent here [Little Rock]; also, that Bill Dark had been wounded and taken prisoner." True Democrat, January 28, 1863, page 1, column 1.
A.S. Cabell's son was Maj Gen DeRosey Carroll Cabell, born in Ft Smith AR, July 7, 1861:
