Did the “Mj. Cabell” mentioned in 41 of the 581 soldiers’ archival records listed in Wells’ Battalion represent “Algemon Sydney Cabell” or his brother, “William Lewis Cabell”?
.
Fact: "appointed Major and QM on May 1, 1863, to rank Feb. 16, 1863" ... Below are four sample records that mention “Mj. Cabell.”

Quoting Mike Thompson:
Ken,
From what I can find A.S. Cabell was appointed Captain QM Dept. appointed Nov. 8 and confirmed Dec. 24, 1861 at Richmond, Va. and reported to Col. A.C. Myers Acting QM CSA. He was tranfered to Steele's Division in 1863 and promoted to Major but this promotion was cancelled and he was assigned as AQM at Bonham,Texas. In July 1864, he appears on the returns of Post of San Antonio,Texas as QM with the rank of Major, he was there until at least Feb. 1865 (last return found).

Cabell's first appointment as Captain & AQM was dated Nov. 8, 1861. Later appointed Major and QM on May 1, 1863, to rank Feb. 16, 1863, Cabell reported to Brig. Gen. William Steele as Chief QM of the Indian Territory. When the war ended, Major Cabell had been at San Antonio TX as post QM for at least a year.

Note: David L. Haimerl of Stover MO transcribed these records and I placed them on my website since Bourland’s Regiment patrolled the same area at the same time as some of the companies in Wells’ Battn.
