I don't have anything additive except my thoughts about the dates. Lee surrendered in April 1865 and it took a while for even rumors to reach the Indian Territory so they must have surrendered out of desperation. Surrendering at Ft Gibson would have been dangerous considering that the Union troops were picketing all the river crossings and Union cavalry was scouting south of the Arkansas. It would be fascinating to learn how they accomplished the surrender.
