Maybe T.R. Allen's choice of words did not express his sentiments conveyed to the judge who approved his pension application, i.e., "surrendered ... to General Reynolds" vs. "Colonel Beard’s Cavalry regiment, was captured and made a POW.” ..Doesn't that sound as though he told the judge that he was a prisoner of war?
.
I have not seen Thomas R. Allen's TX CSA Denton Co TX pension application #38092 but copied what I think are "excerpts" from:

See comments about Pvt Thomas R. Allen's service record on:

A broader question is: Why was Capt. W.A. Beard's Company I of Wells' Battn in the Fort Gibson area in April 1865 while the rest of the regiment, as least most of the regiment, on the Texas coast? ..Below is a quote from Daniel Haimerl's input, that is toward the bottom the web page: http://www.bourlandcivilwar.com/WellsBattn.htm

.
On February 14th 1865, the regiment was ordered south from Indian Territory and instructed to report for duty at Houston, Texas. During the short career of the regiment only one higher command assignment has been identified for this unit. March 31, 1865, Fifth Texas Cavalry Brigade, Second Texas Cavalry Division, First Corps, Army of Trans-Mississippi.
.
On April 24, 1865, the regiment was ordered to Camp Angeles, Texas. When the Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi Department surrendered, Wells' Texas Cavalry was included among them. The unit probably disbanded a short time before the surrender, however.
