Evelyn, you bring up a very good point. Even today the actions of one or two people who are representative of a group of people, define everyone of that group and the prejudice towards them becomes set in stone. There were many southern indian slave holders and few disagree that they treated their slaves badly, and yet the most viscious of the Missiouri State Militia commanders, such as William Pennick of the 5th MSM was himself a large holder of slaves in western Missouri. His mem became known as Pennick's Thieves. Yet the southern Indian Slave holder was classified as viscious and cruel. In Pennick's case though his actions caught up to him.
