If you want to get totally confused and frustrated, try researching the genealogy of the Cherokee Vann families! Starr shows Fannie Vann's father as James Springston Vann and mother as Araminta Ross, daughter of Lewis Ross and neice of Chief John Ross.
Judge John S. Vann who lived on Gooseneck Bend is Capt John Shepherd Vann of Watie's Regt and brother of James Springston Vann.
Lt. Col. William Potter Ross was lt. col. of Drew's Regt, the 1st Cherokee Mtd Rifles. He was Chief John Ross's nephew. He is the "Col. Ross" that was arrested by Capt Greeno at Park Hill in July 1862. See Greeno's report in the ORs, Series 1, Vol 13, page 161
...and page 473
Note that Chief Ross was left at home in Park Hill when Capt Greeno returned to Weer's camp with the officers and defectors of Drew's Regt. Col. Drew was at Ft Davis with the less than 100 of his regiment that didn't defect.
Ross's home, Rose Cottage, was reportedly burned by Watie's men during the war. The Murrell home, Hunter's Home, survived and is now a historical site. There is a very good OHS website for the Murrell home and the nearby Ross Cemetery. Murrell was from Virginia and, according to this website, served in a Virginia unit after leaving Park Hill.
