See the photo below. The Cherokee Nation (previously Osage land) was a major supplier of salt to points downstream as far as New Orleans. From salines, springs of salt water, the water was boiled off in large kettles, the salt put in barrels, and shipped down the Grand and Arkansas Rivers.
