The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Re: 3rd Wisconsin Cav - Natl Tribune

reply to Ken, you have a great memory, my GGgrandfather lived at the old Sam Houston place across the river from Fort Gibson on a bluff that overlooked both Gibson and Ok Oklahoma. I have one photograph of Abner in front of the house with his wife Amanda. If I know how to do it, I would post it for you.

I can send it to your e-mail if you would be interested in seeing it. Abner was a Yankee who enlisted at 13 years of age, was in the Atlanta Campaign where he was captured and sent to Andersonville for a period of 9 months rest and relaxation, from there he was placed on board the Sultana, and everyone knows what happened to it.
I have been told by the last person who was still living and known him that he came to Oklahoma after killing two other Yankees in a fight in Kentucky. I have since found out that his family was known for feuding and perhaps that was what happened. Anyway however it happened he landed at the Sam Houston place until his death. My mother was born in a house not very far off from the Houston place that place being destroyed by a tornado, from what I have been told. By the way I now have a photo of the Houston house taken by the U.S. Gov. during the WPA and you can see the place where Abner and Amanda were likely at for the photograph.
