Re: Usray, Usrey in Cherokee Volunteers

James Usery enlisted as a Private in Company I, 1st Cherokee IT Cavalry

Also in Company I were D. C. Usery, Isaac Usery, John Usery, Philip Usery, Sgt. William Usery & William Usery, Jr.

The 1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers (also known as Watie's Regiment: as the 2nd Regiment Cherokee Mounted Rifles, Arkansas, and as the 1st Regiment Mounted Rifles, or Rifleman was organized July 12, 1862, for two years. Five companies that were temporarily attached to this regiment after the reorganization are reported to have been assigned, February 3, 1863, to the 2nd Regiment Mounted Volunteers.

I am unable to access the Compiled Service records for the Usery men as Footnote has omitted the surnames L-Y from their listings. I have advised them of this omission today.

Note, there are two regiments with similar designations, the other being the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles (1st Arkansas Cherokee Mounted Rifles)

1st Regiment Cherokee Mounted Volunteers, also called 2nd Regiment Cherokee Mounted Rifles were first organized July 12, 1862 for 12 months, reorganized July 12, 1862 for 2 years
