Re: 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles

I want to clarify one thing about Schoenmakers and Gilmore's flight from Osage Mission. In my summary, I made it sound like Schoenmakers and Gilmore fled Osage mission a night or two before the raid on Humboldt. I didn't mean to imply that.

Mathews band did chase Gilmore and Schoenmakers to Humboldt. The Father garnered a couple days' head start due to a flood. Mathews did follow, but that was in June (21st), and at that point in time, the band that was with him was judged to be insufficient for a raid into Humboldt. So, they turned back and reorganized, and waited until the time was right. They waited until most of the men were out of Humboldt - away with Jim Lane - and then raided the town. Their force was numbered at 125 - 150, depending on the source, and was comprised mostly of whites, and mixed-blood Cherokees and Osages, although some full-blooded Osages seemed to have been present. According to one source, the whites were dressed as Indians.
