Thomas Jackson in 1 Cherokee Mounted Volunteers

Hello! I think the following CSR might be for my gggrandfather:

Jackson, Thomas
2 Co. K, 1 Cherokee Mounted Volunteers
Private
Card Number 51856488

Some other information on the CSR:

Appears on the muster roll for Oct 1 1862 to (not sure what it says) 30 1863

Enlisted July12 at Fort Davis by Capt James Stuart.

Absent. On detached service since 15 May with Capt Lee battery.

Here’s the information I have on my Thomas Jackson:

Thomas Marion Jackson, Born April 12, 1832 in Tennesee.
Moved to Missouri some time between 1850 and 1854.
Married Virgina C. Holt in 1854 in Missouri.
Still in Missouri in 1870
By 1875 had moved to Fannin County Texas
Died in Oklahoma in 1899

Very little family oral history on him. Only that he was mixed blood.
Oral history from his daughter, Cordelia (my great grandmother) was that her mother Virginia was Indian and that the family was Cherokee. Cordelia also said she wanted to sign up for the Dawes roll but her husband kept putting off taking her to town to sign up and she got there too late.

Seven of his grandchildren (my grandfather’s first cousins) were students at Carlisle Indian Industrial School, listed as Delaware.

So there is some mystery here.

My hypothesis is that he was mixed blood Cherokee and that Virginia Holt was Delaware. Just a hypothesis. Not enough verifiable facts to know for sure. SOMEONE was Delaware, or Carlisle got it wrong. If my gggrandfather was one of Waite’s troops, then that would confirm the family story of Cherokee ancestry.

I would be grateful for any insights or information folks might have to offer.

Thanks,

Nona Wright
