The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

July 1861; McCulloh & Burleson; Caddo; Wichita tr

I am seeking more info on the meetings of Colonel McCulloch and Major Burleson with the Caddos and the Wichitas. I first found evidence of these meeting on Wikipedia, then was surprised to find corroborating evidence in McCulloch's 1st TX Cavalry CSR. ... Well, July 26, 1861 was remebered as "late June" which is close enough, considering that McCulloch [1816-1895) wrote late in his life.

Below is an entry from my book (of course, my format is lost):

1861 now Childress Co TX or Harmon Co OK, Buck or Gypsum Creek, May.....Charles Goodnight and 12-15 Tonkawas guided H.E. McCulloch to negotiate with Comanche Eagle Chief, Caddo Red Bear #2, plus Kiowas Satanta, Satank, and Lone Wolf They refused to join the Confederacy. Goodnight thought they wanted to trade horses and cattle, stolen in Texas, with Mexico. Later, the Union encouraged trading stolen livestock. per Haley’s Charles Goodnight, p64. (see vIp228; vIIppA-255, A-413, A-453.)

Editor’s note: On Jul 26, Col. Henry E. McCulloch crossed Red River with Maj. Ed N. Burleson to ensure the friendliness (or at least neutrality) of the Wichitas and Caddos, following this with a warning that any raids across the river into Texas would bring retaliation. per McCulloch’s 1st TX Cavalry CSR.

My friend's book .... Elam, Earl H., Kitikiti’sh, The Wichita Indians and Associated Tribes in Texas, Hillsboro, Hill College Press (2008), 437pp. ....It seems that Earl H. Elam specialized in the Wichita bands of Indian Terriory .... but nothing about this 1861 meetings.

After the Sep 30, 1858 Battle of Wichita Village, near now Rush Springs OK, the Wichitas relocated to the Whitebead area (Demors said "Cherokeetown, a Caddo village, but then no one had heard of Whitebead and he was writing for his audience) area while most eventually went to the now Verden area, now on the Caddo-Grady County OK line.
.
The Caddo tribe that McCulloch and Burleson visited may have been in one or both locales: probably in the now Whitebead, Garvin Co OK area or (2) the now Verden area, but probably the Whitebead area since some were still there for the 1871 survey. See my web page that shows W.G. "Caddo Bill" Williams (a white, m. to a Caddo, who also also owned a large ranch in Verden.
