Re: David Rowe
In Response To: Re: David Rowe ()

Thanks for posting the interview, Donna. I have a hardcopy of it somewhere and have in my notes that he was referred to as a "Pin". However, I'm skeptical as to whether that is accurate since he was a Captain in the Confederate Provost Guard. Perhaps he, like David Vann, was attempting to be "neutral" -- a virtual impossiblity.

Much to my surprise, Elizabeth Vann nee Rowe was apparently married to George West prior to her marriage to David Rowe. It just so happens that this George West is my ggg uncle.

My best guess is she was born about 1825-1828 (she's 68 on the Old Settlers Payroll), then she was only about 18 in 1843. It is a long convoluted story but the basics are: In 1843, a band of men, which included Jacob West and his sons John and George, attacked David Vann, Isaac Bushyhead, and others at the Saline Courthouse. Bushyhead was killed. George, it was said, was the one who killed Bushyhead, at the urging of his father Jacob, and he therefore fled from the Cherokee Nation, never to return. Jacob and John were charged and tried in Cherokee Court. Jacob was executed by hanging and John received 100 lashes. Jacob is my ggg grandfather and John is my gg grandfather.

David Rowe is on the Old Settlers Roll 1851 as follows:

Group: 22 District: Saline
Rowe, David
Rowe, Elizabeth
Rowe, Napoleon
Rowe, Clarinda

The Old Settlers Payroll 1896 shows his heirs:

Clarinda Vann nee Rowe, alive age 43 female Pryor Creek

David Rowe, dead
A. Clarinda Vann dau 43 f Pryor Creek
B. Napoleon Rowe son 45 m Rose
C. D.C. Rowe son 41 m Rose
D. Elizabeth Rowe wid 68 f Rose

[The above is interesting in that the Old Settlers Roll 1851 was based on persons living as of March 1851. The Old Settlers Payroll, for those on the original roll or their heirs, was completed and paid in 1896. The commission to determine elgibility for the Payroll wasn't created until 1893. So, Clarinda must have been no more than a year old in 1851.]
