Re: New Book on Battles at Newtonia, MO

The book looks good.

One of the things that concerns me is that book implies that the Battle of Newtonia was the only battle where Native Americans fought each other in regimental strength.

From the Neoshodailynews.com;
[According to a press release from History Press, “(Wood) expertly chronicles both Battles of Newtonia, the first of which, in 1862, was the Confederacy’s first attempt to re-establish a significant presence in Missouri and the only Civil War battle in which American Indians took opposing sides, fighting in units of regimental strength.]

From Chapter 3 first paragraph;
[One of the distinguishing features of the First Battle of Newtonia is the fact that it is one of the few battles, if not the only battle, of the Civil War in which organized units of regimental strength composed of American Indians fought against one another.]

Is that accurate? Was Newtonia the only battle where Indians in regimental strength fought each other? What about Honey Springs?

Anyhow, I'm interested in the book mainly because it's part of the story about the war in the I.T. I'm also interested in the where abouts of Rains and what units were with him. It looks like it might have some good information in that area. The section about the 1st battle looks fairly detailed. The maps look fairly spartan and schematic in nature. I believe they are computer generated. There are a lot of them and several photographs as well. I look forward to reading it and hearing comments as well.
