The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Re: New Book on Battles at Newtonia, MO

I'm not an expert but I did finish the book this evening.

You are right about the minor errors but I don't think they are serious enough to keep anyone from enjoying the book.

As you mentioned, the author calls Chilly McIntosh Chitty. The book also has Salomon sometimes spelled Solomon. In fact on page 77 both spellings are there in the 1st and 2nd sentences of the chapter. This is funny to me because I have done the same thing in my email discussions.

I think his take on the "First Federal Invasion" of Indian Territory was accurate enough, especially the part about Greeno and Ross. This is sort of a measuring rod for me as it was a complex affair. He may be off a bit in terms of the sequence of some events. To me the author kind of implied that Ross left the I.T. in mid July with Salomon (p.40). I thought he left in August as per one of Col. Phillips' dispatches in the O.R.

The Maps could have been better but at least there are a lot of them.

The book was very informative however. I don't know much about these battles so anything was welcome. I was especially interested in the section that dealt with General Rains and what was going on in SW Missouri in the fall of 1862. The book covered this in some detail. I was also interested in the Haimerl book on Clarkson's Battalion for precisely the same reasons.

I enjoyed reading the story about the efforts to preserve the battlefield.

In the end the book was a page turner for me. I think if anyone has any interest in the topic at all the book was well worth the price. We need more scholarship for the Civil War out here.
