Re: Elijah Lake, 1st Choctaw Mounted Rifles

Yes, it would be quite the thing if he was the same man. The Elijah that I am related to was born in 1844 in Dearborn County, Indiana. His father was Elijah Lake and his mother was Maria Ashby. Maria was born in either Indiana or Kentucky in about 1812, her father Baylis came from Virginia and was known in Dearborn County as "The Virginian" because he was one of the first settlers of that county to come from the South. Elijah's father was born in New York in 1796 and died in Lee County, Iowa in 1857. Around that time Elijah would move with his brother Simpson to Anderson County, Kansas. The Lake's came from up from Boston to Maryland, through South Carolina, and up to Virginia. I cannot prove that Elijah had Southern leanings since he didn't own any slaves and was not born in the South, but I do know that his family lived there at one time. His full name was Elijah Baylis Lake, Elijah after his father and Baylis after his grandfather, Baylis Ashby. Elijah was married to Melissa Sturdivant in about 1867 and fathered 14 children with her.

If anyone can make a connection, that would be great, this is about all the info I have on him.
