The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

OHS Seminars . . .

At the 2010 annual meeting of the Oklahoma Historical Society, I was privileged to chair a session where Professor Bill Corbett and Beau Cantrell presented respective papers on "Courting Disaster: The Five Civilized Tribes in the Civil War" and "Oklahoma's First Congressional Delegation . . . To Richmond!" Both were well received and it was suggested that at the end of our proposed six-year cycle of annual meeting programs that we publish all the papers in a new book on the CW in IT.

As it was originally proposed, the OHS annual meetings 2010-2016 would feature at least one session on the Civil War in Indian Territory, with perhaps the 2013 meeting devoted nearly entirely to the subject. With this in mind, I'm thinking of the following topics, but am also soliciting suggestions and opinions on what readers/contributors to this board feel would be best for both audience enjoyment/enlightenment and as topics for a future book.

Here are my current thoughts:

2011 - Albert Pike and the Making of Treaties (with the Five Civilized Tribes);
"Chasing Opothleyahola: The Battles of Round Mountain, Chusto-Talasah, and Chustenalah”

2012 - "Beginning of the End: Confederate Indian Troops Outside Their Homelands & the Federal Invasion of I.T.";
"The Hindman-Pike Controversy: Politics, Military Organization, and A Clash of Iron Wills"

2013 - America’s First Black Civil War Regiment: The 1st Kansas Colored Infantry;
The Biggest Fight in Indian Territory: The Battle of Honey Springs, July 17, 1863;
Personalities: Cooper, Watie, McIntoshes, The Texans (Bass, DeMorse, Martin); Blunt, Phillips, Williams, Ross

2014 - Phillips' March from the Canadian to the Red;
“Now the Wolf Has Come: The Civilian Civil War in the Indian Territory”

2015 - “The Last General to Surrender: Stand Watie’s Confederate Command”;
"Which Side are You On? Tribal Governments during the War"

2016 - "The War’s Aftermath: The Fort Smith & Washington Treaties of 1866 and 1867";
"Reaping the Whirlwind: Loyalists’ Claims against the Government (Hazen Commission)"

Your comments and suggestions will be not only welcomed but sincerely appreciated.
