Kribbs, Brebbs, Rubbs....

On page 99, the text of "A Southern Record" mentions a "Mr. J. Brebbs" where he (Capt Brusle) stopped on August 1st, 1861. (Left Ft Smith on July 30th). The next date says "22nd August" but from context should be the "2nd", when he mentions Tom Starr and a Mr. Rubbs.

I think "Brebbs" should be "Kribbs" (or Cribbs or Krebs).

Joe Kribbs lived on the south side of the Canadian, somewhere in the vicinity of present Whitefield, and not far from Tom Starr who lived on the north side of the Canadian on Younger Bend, just southwest of Briartown. Watie and Cooper both mention Kribb's place in the ORs regarding the capture of the riverboat J.R. Williams near the mouth of the Canadian on the Arkansas. Lt Col Robt Parks mentions relocating the camp of the 1st Cherokee Mtd Vols (Watie's) from near Webbers Falls to the Choctaw Nation and passing Starr's and then "Joe Cribbs". (The ORs mention "Stan's Place" near Briartown which I believe is a transcription error of "Starr's Place").

So, who is "Mr. Rubbs"? From the context, I'm wondering if the person who transcribed the handwritten text or set the type from the handwritten text again misread "Kribbs" as "Rubbs".

On a side note, Tom Starr was the future father-in-law of the notorious Belle Starr (Marybelle Shirley) who married his son Sam and lived on his place. Jim's and my great-great grandfather, Franklin Pierce West, operated the ferry across the Canadian between Briartown and Whitefield and was second-cousin to Sam Starr. Frank and Sam killed each other in a shoot-out at Whitefield in the late 1880s. Family lore says the mysterious killer of Belle Starr was a West in retaliation for the killing of Frank.

I'm suspecting that Kribbs, Brebbs, and Rubbs are one in the same UNLESS someone can identify a Brebbs or Rubbs that lived in the area along the Canadian (between present Eufaula and Stigler). I haven't had time to search yet but neither name is familiar to me.

Thanks for posting this Evelyn and thanks big cousin for the link to the online text!
