The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

title of Colonel or General, most home guards

Robert Negelein,
.
Within a few hours of my posting the above blurb; coincidentally, on my screen appeared the following census. .. Internet problems for a couple of weeks here in Duncan OK, or I would have gotten back with you sooner.
.
1860 Grayson Co Virginia cen p505
GRAY, Wm. R. 28 VA
Eliz, 28 VA
Abram C. 7 VA
Major R. 5 VA .....Major Robinson Gray
Colonel T. 4 VA ....
.
This W.R. Gray family came to Texas then died in now Delaware Co OK, but he was not my target GRAY, but he may be the "W.R. Gray" listed in an Aug 26, 1842 meeting documented in Landrum's HISTORY OF GRAYSON COUNTY (TX) pages 4 and 5 ... that was recently put online. ..Another W.R. Gray (d-1902) was married to a Caddo. (see my Name Index entry below.)

James A. Caldwell
Holland Coffee
Joseph Durst
James Gamble
George Gray, Grey ...W.R. Gray in ONLY one record, Landrum's
Slone Love
F.R. Lubbock
Thomas Ingles Smith
Ethan Stroud
Leonard H. Williams

As you can see, I have corrected some of the names. ..Keep in mind that about 1992 I copied from Landrum's book, info about Col. Bourland and friends. Soon afterwards I found that Robt. Simpson Neighbors had documented that this Aug 26, 1842 meeting took place in "a Caddo village above the Chickasaw nation." ... Good news is that I have learned that an institution here in Oklahoma has "applied for a grant" to transcribe all of Robert Simpson Neighbors' records housed in Arlington TX.
.
Since then I have tried to find more info about this meeting ... thus far, nothing. ..But it is evident that these famous names were written YEARS later ... and the next generation could only "remember" rich men, sorry that's reconstructing history. Also Landrum was reading handwritten records, which could have been wildly distorted.
.
Therefore, I have decided that "George Gray, Grey" is a better candidate for the GRAY who attended this Aug 26, 1842 meeting in now Whitebead, Garvin Co OK. ... This George Gray was earrly on in the North Fork of the Sulphur River region. Yes, Col. Bourland's baliwick, but before he arrived in 1837. ... Problem is that I do not know this "George Gray's death date". If he was still alive, I'd bet he was there, if for no other reason than to meet Caddos he had known years earlier: residents of the Whitebead area were of the Whitebead Band of Caddos, who were his constituents from 1819-1829, when he was the U.S. Indian agent.

From my 200-page Name Index
.
GRAY, GREY, George Gray, no death date; Caddo Indian Agent 1819-1829; Landrum had W.R. Gray listed, one Wm. Riley Gray (1830 VA-1915 Delaware Co OK); one W.R. Gray (d-1902, middle age), m-a Caddo per MINCO MINSTREL (1842 Treaty signed in now Whitebead OK)

I consider this an important additon to Okla histoy and yes, I am the first to document this, warts and all. Any help would be greatly apppreciated. I have posted most of the above data on my Garvin County web page, that is an outline of the 1871 survey by the Bureau of Land Management Survey of now Garvin County.
