His name on the roster is how ever the person writing it understood it and perhaps not his 'real name' so it very well may be 'E. Green' but written 'Green E.' since he was called 'Green'. His name on a census would be a better indicator of his 'real name' though in those times names could evolve over time in the absence of birth certificates and social security cards and such. My grandmother is on the 1900 census as Topal G. Jones and she was called Topie as a child but later Gladys as an adult and when she got her social security card in the 1950s (she never had a drivers license) she put Gladys Topal Holmes (a step-father's surname). There was recently some posts on Will Rogers' real name and which shows several variations until the Dawes Roll which 'fixed' his name as William Penn Rogers though at birth he was named 'Colonel William Penn Adair Rogers'.... but I digress, as usual.
