The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Survey Maps 1890s

You can view/download the original General Land Office survey maps from the Bureau of Land Management website. The general land surveys of the Cherokee and Creek Nations were completed in the late 1890s. The Chickasaw Nation was done earlier -- early 1870s.

If you don't know the township and range you want, go to OKgenweb first and get the legal description at
http://www.okgenweb.org/okprojects/maps-dot.html

Then go to the BLM GLO site...

Survey Plats and Field Notes
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx?searchTabIndex=0&searchByTypeIndex=1

Under 'Location' enter state, county, and/or the legal description and click 'Search Surveys'. You'll get a list of surveys.

On the right end of the line for each survey, click the icon that says 'Plat Image'.

You'll get a message that says their online viewers aren't working and you need to click one of the icons on the bottom right -- I usually choose PDF because it is much smaller than the SID files and I don't know what a JP2 is ;-) Of course the SID file is much higher resolution.

It will take a minute to process and then right below the PDF icon will say "PDF Generated" -- click on 'Download' to view the file.

Once you're viewing it, you can save it to your hard drive. The PDF files are usually about 3.5 mb.
