In the summer of 1885, 3 companies of Cheyenne were enlisted at Fort Reno to serve for six months.
Co. stayed at Reno, Co. B was posted to Fort Supply, and C went to Fort Elliott, TX. These Indians
were paid, rationed, clothed, armed, and paid the same as regular soldiers. Their dependents were allowed
to go to the post they were sent to and were rationed also. The companies lasted, in diminishing numbers
until about 1894. They served as auxillaries to cavalry and infantry. They were led by a regular army officer.
The 1st Sergt. and other NCOs were Indians. For more information check the Fort Supply pages at okhistory.org website.
