Sorry to reactivate an old thread but I am desperate to find out more about the Battle of Chusto-Talasah/Caving Banks. I've seen only one map of the battle area and it seems to show Col. Cooper's force crossing to the east side of Bird Creek well north of Opothleyahola's camp then moving sort of southeast to approach the camp from the east (heading in a westerly direction). The Caving Banks part of Bird Creek is the Horseshoe Bend, right? Where the creek bends outward to the east then back? From what I understand the cabin was east of the creek but when part of the Choctaw & Chickasaw regiment captured the cabin Cooper's report in the Official Records says they were reinforced by what men could be spared from a few other companies of that regiment then pressed on but here is where it gets confusing for me. Cooper says that "after a fierce struggle the enemy was forced, with heavy loss, through the bend and across the creek."

So Opothleyahola's men withdrew to the west bank but did Cooper's force follow them across and fight them on the land partially enclosed by the bend in the creek and THEN because of what Cooper refers to as "direct firing from the creek and from the right and rear" his force was "compelled to retreat again to the house (what Cooper calls the cabin)"? Or was there much more space between the cabin and the east bank of Bird Creek than I thought and the fighting after the capture of the cabin took place THERE and at no time did Cooper's force actually cross Bird Creek? I'm especially interested in input from the person known as Cherokee Name who grew up around the area but I will gladly welcome any information from anyone who could shed some light on this battle.
