Lt Col George E. Deneale

In searching for info on Lt Col George E. Deneale and his failed plan to raise a regiment of Choctaw for service in Virginia, known as Deneale's Choctaw Warriors, I ran across several public notices in the Clarksville TX Standard in and about April 1859. According to these notices, Deneale has a number of large unpaid debts, originating in 1858. The notices also state that George E. Deneale, a resident of Rockingham County VA, "has property consisting of Negro Slaves, Horses, Mules, Wagons, &c., situated in said Red River County".

I have been wondering how Deneale, from northern Virginia, became connected to the Choctaw in Indian Territory. This at least puts him adjacent to the Choctaw Nation before the war.

By the time Deneale had recruited, paid, and equipped about a battalion of Choctaw, events were such that the Choctaw refused to leave their country, likely influenced by Brig Gen Albert Pike who commanded the District of Indian Territory. Deneale returned to Virginia in May/June 1861 and was paid as a colonel of cavalry through at least Sept 1861. It appears he returned to civilian life for the remainder of the war.
