Rev Worcester Willey

Kanawiski was the name given to Rev. Worcester Willey, the missionary to Dwight Mission from 1845 to about 1869.

Even upon the possession of what household furniture they found, the rebels often set their eyes of greed. And, as we shall soon see, other household treasures, for which they could have but little or no use, were also ruthlessly and meanly stolen.

But not only were the rebels inspired by the spirit of evil in that respect. Kanawiski had afterward the testimony of an eyewitness that one colonel of the Union army unloaded into his own house a load of furniture which he had thus stolen from the Mission. The last time the missionary saw the colonel, the latter was sitting in the Mission study chair at his headquarters, about four miles distant. The Union army also killed the Mission cows as they passed, and their supply train was loaded with the beef thus obtained. For this no compensation was received.

Kanawiski noted with sorrow that the Union army were less faithful in paying for their army supplies than were the authorities of the South.
