The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Richard, I know I'm replying to a really old post but noticed a couple of things you may not be aware of. First, on Fold3.com, the records for the 1st Choctaw Regt and the 1st Choctaw & Chickasaw Mtd Rifles are mixed up. Under the 1st Choctaw is surnames A-G of the 1st Choctaw & Chickasaw. Under the 1st Choctaw & Chickasaw A-G are all the records for the 1st Choctaw. Neither of these regiments are Deneale's Choctaw Warriors. Deneale was a Virginian who attempted to organize a Choctaw regiment starting in late 1861. Davis James in that organization enlisted in January 1862 (as you know). It never got above battalion size and was disbanded, with much controversy, in May 1862 (if I recall the date correctly). The July dates on many of the service records in Deneale's are from when he returned to Richmond and had to report on what had been paid etc.. The unit never left the Choctaw Nation.

The above relates exclusively to Choctaw in the Indian Territory. However, it is possible some men left the Choctaw Nation and went to Mississippi and joined up with their relatives or friends there. You're probably aware that their are many 'James' but no 'Davises' in either the 1st Choctaw & Chickasaw Mtd Rifles or the 1st Choctaw Regt.. Some of those who enlisted in Deneale's "Regiment" show up in other units but some just 'disappear' from the records.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you find more on Davis James.
