The math says that Price would have needed to have had only 6,701 men in his army on November 6, 1864 as he approached the Arkansas River (after passing Dwight Mission) for this to have been the largest combined military operation in Indian Territory during the Civil War. Price still had six brigades plus Wood's battalion at this point, with Tyler's brigade alone having over 3,500 men, and Shelby's division (of two brigades) being nearly at full strength. Almost surely, Price had more than 6,701 men with him!
While all of these statistics of troop size are uncertain (especially for Confederate military units operating in Indian Territory this late in the war), the fact that such a large military operation was occurring along Sallisaw Creek in Indian Territory just prior to the critical Lincoln-McClellan Presidential Election in the North is remarkable. Least we forget. The outcome of the tight Presidential Election could have been
different.
