Two men’s names, related to the western historical trails we have noted in Indian Territory, are inscribed on Inscription Rock (El Morro) along the Trail of the Ancients (and Beale Wagon Road) in New Mexico: (1) Lt. James (J.) H. Simpson, Topographical Engineer with Capt. Randolph B. Marcy’s expedition from Fort Smith to New Mexico in April 1849, and (2) P. Gilmer Breckinridge, a young college/law graduate who had special engraving skills, as has been noted for inscribing Kerlin’s Well and Law’s Spring locations as Beale’s wagon train returned east thru Arizona in July 1859. “Lt. J. H. Simpson, USA” was the first English inscription made at El Morro, placed on September 17, 1849. Lt. Simpson remained on duty in New Mexico for over a year after Capt. Marcy left to explore an optional Southern route thru Texas back to Fort Smith (which was later used by the Butterfield Overland Stage in 1858). “P. Gilmer Breckinridge” boldly engraved his name as E. F. Beale’s wagon train returned from the Colorado River to Albuquerque, stopping a few hours to rest at Inscription Rock, NM on July 26, 1859.
