In Response To: John W. Alberty ()

Hello Hugh! The reference to Lt Col Bryan in 1865 must be Bryan's "Cherokee Battalion for Special Service. To my knowledge the only service records/roster for this battalion (later regiment) is a list of white men in Miller's Company. The list of the company commanders is a great find! John Miller was captain Company E of Bryan's 1st Cherokee Partisan Rangers. Then captain Company A of the 2nd Cherokee Mtd Vols (Adair's) as of Feb. 3, 1863, though he still signed as Captain Company E of Bryan's Battalion in March and April 1863. Then at some point captain in Bryan's Cherokee Battalion for Special Service. I'm assuming these are all the same John Miller.

My supposition is that John W. Alberty did not die and that information was incorrect. (Perhaps confused with the death of his wife Clara at Goodwater in 1864). I believe this is John Wright Alberty, aka "Jack" (1834 - 1905), son of John Alberty and Mary Wright. Per Emmet Starr he served under Capt George H. Starr, 1st Company G, 1st Cherokee Mtd Vols. His service record on Fold3 only shows him in 2nd Co. D as a private.

According to Emmet Starr, the 2nd Lt. John Alberty in Holt's Squadron, Co. A is John D. Alberty (1814 - 1896), son of Moses Alberty and Sallie Wright -- and cousin of John W. Alberty. His younger brother was Capt Bluford West Alberty of co. J and then co. N in Watie's Regiment and then co. B in Adair's Regiment.

The younger sister of Mary Wright and Sallie Wright was Rebecca who married Joel Mayes Bryan so Bryan was an uncle of both John D. and John W. (and Bluford West Alberty).

My supposition is that the first three references to Capt Alberty are Bluford West Alberty, Co. B, 2nd Cherokee Mtd Vols (Adair's). Adair and Buck Brown were around Fayetteville and the Cherokee border in May 1864.
