Joseph Norvell was in Colonel William C.P. Breckinridge's, 9th Kentucky Cavalry. He left a short written record which shows he originally was in Company A, 2nd Kentucky Cavalry under Captain John Hunt Morgan. He listed four times that he was captured. He escaped three times and was exchanged once. When he joined the 9th Kentucky he was made a Lieutenant at a battle on a creek around Atlanta.
