What is "(Un)Subscribe"? The KYCWMB Digest

For those of you who are new to the "History-Sites.Com" message boards, the "(Un)Subscribe" feature allows you to receive a daily list of the messages posted on this site. It does not put you on a generic mailing list, is not accessible by visitors to the site and will not be sold or shared with and other private or commercial interests.

The digest allows you to "keep up" with the postings here and includes links to respond to the poster without coming to the site. The KYCWMB Digest is an ideal way for "busy" people with varied interests to follow the postings on this site, so I'd encourage you to include your email address as a subscriber.

At anytime you may remove yourself from the list or ask me to do so. I hope you'll take advantage of this valuable feature.

Jim Martin

Jim... Another favorite state of mine, Kentucky. My wife's great-grandfather,
Joseph "Jo" Norvell, served as a private in Company A, 2nd Kentucky Cavalry
(Colonel John Hunt Morgan's company), became a scout under Captain Thomas
Quirk, and transferred to the 9th Kentucky Cavalry after several exciting
escapes from capture.
Does anyone out there have any information on the Norvell listed above.
Thanks,
Howard

I'm glad to see this site is up and running. My interests lay in Quantrill and
his men. They fought in several battles/skirmishes in Kentucky. Quantrill was
supposedly mortally wounded and died in Kentucky. Notice, I said supposedly. I
have received information from persons in three different states that claim
Quantrill died in their state; Arkansas, Arizona and Alabama.

Dear Rose Mary,
I'm glad you're hear and thanks for your earlier kind and supportive words
regarding the opening of this site.
What do you know about the pursuit of Quantrill across Kentucky? I have two
(2) ancestors who were members of the 54th Kentucky Mounted Infantry (US) and
participated in this pursuit. Do you have anything on this unit, its movements
and/or general participation in this action?
Happy New Year!

Jim,
This is what I have about the places where they fought:
Bewleyville on March 1, 1865
Georgetown 1865 Located in Scott County.
Chaplain 1865 (probably the same town as Chaplintown). Located in Nelson
County. Fought Capt. Ed Terrill.
Chaplintown January 28 (or 30th, or Feb. 1), 1865; Feb. 2, 1865
Harrodsburg Jan. 29 Located in Jessamine County. Fought Major Bridgewater.
Hartford Jan. 22 Located in Ohio County.
Hickman Feb. 28 Located in Fulton County. Some of Quantrill's men robbed the
town.
Hopkinsville 1865 Located in Christian County.
Houstonville Feb. 9 Located in Casey County. Fought Bridgewater.
Hustonville 1865 (same as Houstonville) Stole horses from Federals.
New Market Feb. 8 Located in Marion County. Captured wagon train.
Spencer (County)Apr. 13 Fought Major Wilson, Capt. Penn and Capt. Ed Terrill.
Wakefield's Farm May 10 Located in Spencer County. Ed Terrill surprised
Quantrill and his men at the James H. Wakefield farm. Quantrill was mortally
wounded and several of his men killed. About 65 of his men surrendered at
Smiley (Samuel's Depot) and were paroled. Some surrendered at Bardstown.
Worthville 1865 Located in Carroll County. Attacked by Federal troops.
I hope this may help you.

Does anyone have any information about Ben Frohman or Zay Coulter? They were
supposedly well-known guerrillas operating in Kentucky during the Civil War.
They were part of a party that attacked my my g-g-g-grandfather, Lorenzo Dow
Brown, Captian, Company D, 54th Ky Mouted Infantry, at his home near Van Buren
in modern-day Western Anderson County. Brown escaped but his finger (or thumb,
depending on whose account) was shot off.

My g-g-g-grandfather was Lorenzo Dow Brown, Captian, Company D, 54th Ky Mouted
Infantry. Company D was stationed at Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
I am looking for photos of Brown or of the entire company. I would also be
interested in learning of the company's movements and history.

Hello,There is no question that Quantrell died in Kentucky. He was mortally
wounded and brought to Louisville, Kentucky. He was buried in St. John
Cemetery on 26th street. About 1880, his mother had his remains disinterred
and brought back to Canal Dover, Ohio. If it wasn't him then his mother
claimed the wrong body. Thanks, Steve Wright

The reason why I say "supposedly", is because there are many who believe
Quantrill lived on. I have received numerous letters from people who believe
Quantrill lived and died in their state, namely, Arizona, Alabama, and
Arkansas. I respect their beliefs and opinions.

John C. Lewis served in the Civil War. He was Confederate Private in (1st)
Company B. 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Confederate States Army, Enlisted
October 25, 1861, and on the muster roll of this company for May and June
1862. He served till his enlistment was out, Oct. 20 1862.
His wife Loucinda filed for Confederate Pension July 12 1912 and was allowed.
My question is, after the 5th disbanded in 1862 did they reenlist in another
unit? Does any one have anything on John c. Lewis after 1862?
Thanks Martin Suiter
