Cause of Death-CW Soldier

My GG Grandfather, James W. Smith, was with the 14th MS Inf., Co A during the Civil War. The roster of his company, Shubuta Rifles, from Clark County, MS states that he died in Russellville, KY in Oct., 1861. I have verified this by a copy of the Smith family bible which states that he died Oct. 8, 1861 in Russellville.

I have searched for years to find the cause of his death (one roster states that he died, another that he was KIA in Russellville) and where he may be buried.

I recently noticed that a lot of soldiers died at Bowling Green, KY in the period, August through December, 1861. Was there a desease during this time that killed a lot of men? Maybe some sent to hospitals in Russellville? Were there any battles during this period in Bowling Green or Russellville? Where were these soldiers buried?

The 14th was said to be in winter quarters at BG at this time, before being sent to Fort Donelson in Feb., 1862.

Thanks for any help you can give.
