The Kentucky in the Civil War Message Board - Archive

Lt. David E. Roberts, KY Fed. Cav. Jan. 1864

Most of my time is spent on the Miss. Civil War Message board, but an interesting original letter with a Kentucky connection came to my attention recently while brousing in an antique store in LaGrange, GA. I heard that the owner's wife had found a letter from David E Roberts, Fed. Cav. Jan. 8, 1864 Near Lexington, KY. to his sister, Lilly in Maysville, KY.

The letter mentions that he is about to "leave Lexington to go to New Castle to hunt rebel bushwackers." The backside of the letter states "Cary, near Lexington KY Cav'ly Jan. 8th" The letter is signed "DER AB address Henry Co. New Castle, KY"

My goal is to identify the man and let the owner know if there are any relatives who would like a copy of the letter.

Could be any of the following men:
David E. Roberts, Com. Sgt. Co. D 10th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry
(Microfilm 386 roll 23)
Edward Roberts, Pvt. Co D 11th KY Cav. (Microfilm 386 roll 23)
Edwin Roberts. Pvt. Co D 7th KY Cav. (Alternate name Edward) (Microfilm 386 roll 23)
(From Soldiers and Sailors system) http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm

Could all be the same guy. 10th KY was mustered out before 1864, but other regiments were active in KY until Jan. 1864. Since David E. Roberts was on F&S and commissary duty, he could have been in several units.-RJS

Anyone with more information on this federal unit or these men, please contact me at rskellie@mindspring.com.

Thanks,
