Re: Muster Rolls
In Response To: Muster Rolls ()

Martha,

Most muster rolls done when the Confederate troops surrendered at the end of the war, unfortunately no longer exist. The US mustering officers were *supposed* to turn these records in to Washington, but it appears that many did not. The CS officers were provided copies of the rolls, but what they did with these, who knows?

Some of the surrender muster rolls are in state archives. I have not heard of any being in the National Archives. Some are in the state archives of the home of the US officer that accepted the surrender (for example, the rolls of the KY "Orphan" Brigade are in Iowa).

The NARA, however, do have some periodic CS muster rolls, but the state of these varies by unit. I don't *think* they have any for the 8th Ky. Mtd. Inf., but not sure.

For the 8th Ky. Inf., you might try the Boone National Guard Research Library in Frankfort. The Kentucky Military History Museum (also in Frankfort) also has copies of many of these rolls (not sure if they have any 8th Ky. Mtd. Inf.).

Hope this helps,

Geoff Walden
