Robert,
Thank you for the thoughtful response to my query regarding the 10th KY Cav. Most of my ancestors are from the Tazewell VA area and served in the 45th VA, 22nd VA and 47th VA Cav (later 26th). My GGgrandfather Samuel McGuire was in the 47th under William Neel Harman and "Mudwall" Jackson, and was KIA in the Covington VA area during the escape of Averell's raiders in Dec 1863. I believe Col. May is buried in Tazewell. Both he and Trimble sounded like remarkable leaders who had the devotion of their men. I will track down Perry's "Jack May's War" per your recommendation.
Prichard certainly makes the point that the raiding and villainy on both sides while men were off on campaigns created the seeds for generations of ugly feuds that also helped fuel the hillbilly stereotypes of our ancestors. This also obviously created serious problems of desertion when men felt they needed to head home and defend their families and farms - what a nightmare.
Do you have a link to or listing of the complete rosters of the KY 45th and 39th? As you say, I may have men in these units, and I have a fairly detailed genealogy that I can cross check.

Regards,
Joe McGuire
